State and federal leave laws create unique compliance challenges for Washington employers. This session provides a practical, compliance-focused overview of Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave and federal FMLA, including eligibility, coordination, and notice and job protection requirements. Attendees will learn strategies to minimize risk, ensure compliance, and confidently manage employee leave across both systems.

Learning Objectives:

  • Overview of important amendments to PFML
  • Identify when PFML, FMLA, or both apply
  • Employer's obligations under each law; understand concept of FMLA/PFML leave stacking and specific requirements if employer intends to limit job protected leave


About Our Presenter: Angela Hayes


Angela Hayes joined Associated Industries in 2009 where she currently serves as Chief Legal Counsel. She spends most of her time advising members on a wide range of employment issues, including wage and hour, harassment and discrimination, leave, and disability issues. Prior to joining the company, Ms. Hayes was a principal and managing partner at Randall & Danskin, P.S., where her practice emphasized employment, business, and trust litigation and medical negligence defense. Ms. Hayes received her law degree from Gonzaga University. Her undergraduate studies include degrees in English and Communication from the University of Washington, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Washington State University. She is licensed to practice law in Washington and Idaho.
