More than two-thirds of an organization’s expenses are often invested in employee wages and benefits - yet many compensation programs fail to deliver the engagement, performance, and retention they are intended to support. In fact, common compensation practices can unintentionally drive turnover, weaken engagement, and limit productivity. In this session, we will challenge traditional approaches to compensation and performance management, uncovering how well-intended systems often produce counterproductive results. Participants will gain practical, actionable strategies to design compensation programs that better align pay with employee value, strengthen engagement, and support long-term organizational success.
Learning Objectives:
• Identify compensation and performance management practices that unintentionally reduce engagement, productivity, and retention
• Explain the gap between employee value and compensation over time and its impact on turnover and satisfaction
• Evaluate the limitations of traditional pay approaches (e.g., market-based, step increases, merit pay) on workforce outcomes
• Recognize how performance management systems influence compensation decisions and organizational effectiveness
• Apply practical strategies to improve compensation program design to support equity, engagement, and retention
